A New York pool hustler named Rudolph Wanderone, who was also known as Fats, and later as Minnesota Fats, slid on the icy road into mail boxes and wanted to fix his car before traveling on. While in town, he met a waitress named Evelyn Inez and also found plenty of gambling “action” in the area. He decided to make the tiny village of Dowell his home. Soon, Evelyn Inez became his wife and the pool halls in Southern Illinois were never the same again.

Minnesota Fats is the most recognized name in the history of billiards. He was a showman and a hustler and later became a Billiard Legend. Because of his unique style, persona and gift for the game, he managed to give the game of pool the most exposure and helped to make it more popular than any other player in history.
Rudolph "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone died in Tennessee in the year of 1996 at the age of 83 of congestive heart failure. He will always be remembered as an entertainer as well as one of the best pool players ever. Besides Minnesota Fats he was also nicknamed "fatty", "triple smart", "dean of the green", "the sultan of stroke", and the "bank shot bandit."
On his tombstone it reads, "Beat everybody living on Earth. Now, St. Peter, rack 'em up." It is widely believed that the movie "The Hustler" is based on the life of Minnesota Fats.
